What is Bidwell Mansion?

A three-story, 26-room house in the Italian Villa style, finished in pink-tinted plaster. When it was built it had the most modern plumbing, gas lighting and water systems of its time. John Bidwell was a pioneer, farmer, soldier, statesman, politician and philanthropist. Annie Bidwell was active in the suffrage and prohibition movements. They married April 16, 1868, and guests at the mansion included Rutherford B. Hayes, William T. Sherman, Susan B. Anthony and John Muir.

Is it open?

The mansion was extensively damaged by arson on December 11, 2024 and remains closed. The Visitor Center, with an exhibit hall, gift shop and theater, is open, and visitors who cannot climb stairs can watch an open-captioned video of the upper floors there. State Parks lists inconsistent hours, including 10 AM to 3 PM Fridays and Saturdays, so call (530) 895-6144 to confirm.

What does it cost?

State Parks lists adult entry at $6.00 and youth entry at $3.00, with possible special rates and changes without notice.
